Kathryn L. Lima

Recognized as one of Pennsylvania's Best 50 Women in Business for 2006.


Although trained as a teacher, Kathryn Lima left the classroom after six years and since has worked in all aspects of marketing, sales, media and fundraising for both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations in five different communities in four states.

She spent five years in newspaper advertising sales; managed a formal market research project, including development of call lists, oversight of the call room, and development of presentation materials; and expanded media exposure for a new public television station.

As a bank marketing director, she taught classes in marketing and public relations for the American Institute of Banking, and earned an Addy for a successful direct-mail campaign on behalf of a new product. She was responsible for all aspects of media relations and communications when her bank merged with a larger institution, and participated in product development and training initiatives for the new entity.

As station manager for a public television station, she:

  • raised over $40,000 in three months with no staff or computer,
  • increased awareness and support for the new station in her market,
  • successfully recruited volunteers and donations for the annual on-air auction, and
  • secured the necessary funding and talent to produce three local programs.

In her capacity as a professional development consultant for a public access television station, she wrote successful foundation and government grant proposals on behalf of her client, and presented workshops on fundraising for national and regional meetings of the Alliance for Community Media.

As executive director and only staff member of a community foundation, she:

  • initiated the foundation's first grant making program;
  • increased the foundation's endowed assets by over one-third;
  • secured a planned gift valued at over $500,000; and
  • obtained a $200,000 challenge grant that provided the impetus needed for the foundation to grow to the next level.

When she was director of major gifts for a small college, she cultivated prospective major donors to the most successful capital campaign in the school's history.

Ms. Lima's extensive personal experience as a staff of one makes her especially attuned to the development challenges faced by small organizations. However she has experience with a large organization as well, having spent five years as vice president for community development and president of the foundation for a two-hospital system with over 300 beds and 1,000 employees. During this time, she:

  • established the Foundation as a community resource and increased its revenues;
  • implemented a customer service training program that earned the hospital the highest customer service evaluation scores in its peer group;
  • expanded the amount of news coverage in both print and broadcast media;
  • improved top-of-mind awareness of the hospital in its market; and
  • participated in the successful launch of a new women’s health service.

As a volunteer, she has chaired successful capital campaigns and special events, and served as a board member and officer for a number of social, professional, and civic organizations.
